Behind every successful nonprofit sits a strong and productive board of directors.  Serving on a nonprofit board is one of the most influential volunteer positions that exists in the nonprofit community, and it comes with responsibility that should not be taken for granted.

A nonprofit board plays a major role in articulating and keeping true to the organization’s mission and purpose, and helps to guide the executive director as she or he oversees their strategic plan and staff.  While many board members may have extensive experience in business, investments, and other relevant fields, the nonprofit sector has its own jargon, legal parameters, and inner-workings.

In order to help our local nonprofits serve their community more effectively, Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation (TTCF) has partnered with the UC Davis Graduate School of Management- Women in Leadership Club to present a four part series on board governance.  Registration is open to nonprofit board members.  Transferable organizational passes are available to encourage organizational representation at all workshops.

Through this format, nonprofits can send a different board member to each workshop depending on what their specific role is on their board. As an incentive, TTCF will provide a $100 grant after completion of full participation of a nonprofit.

“We are excited to provide an engaging and rigorous curriculum that we believe will strengthen our nonprofits.  Included in the workshop will be templates and handouts that will help translate the ideas into action,” said Stacy Caldwell, TTCF CEO.

Workshop dates and the topics of board governance that will be explored are:

  • October 2, 2015- 8am-11am: Board Responsibility and Board Culture – Learn how to build a powerful and engaged board of directors
  • October 9, 2015- 8am-11am: Financial Stewardship and Legal Compliance – Ensuring nonprofit dollars advance the mission. Oversight and fiduciary responsibilities
  • October 16, 2015- 8am-11am: Strategic Planning and Evaluation – Make sure everyone is rowing in the same direction. Tracking impact and outcomes
  • October 23, 2015- 8am-11am: Fundraising in a New World – Exploring new models of fundraising and creating a plan for the future

The series is designed to help new and seasoned board members advance the mission-based work of their organizations.  Each workshop will feature a panel of experts who will share their knowledge and answer any questions attendees have.  The series will introduce a curriculum of governance best practices through tangible exercises and take-away resources for immediate integration.
