Big Jack East – Tahoe National Forest Restoration Project

Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation
Published on November 21, 2020

In August 2019, TTCF awarded the National Forest Foundation a grant as part of our efforts to protect our forests. The grant went towards producing an educational video to showcase different forest health and fuel reduction treatments such as hand thinning, biomass removal, and mastication— as well as demonstrate how these methods protect our communities. The video followed the Big Jack East Project, located in Placer County, California and south of the Town of Truckee. Big Jack East is a collaborative project between the NFF and the United States Forest Service to treat approximately 2,000 acres of National Forest System lands with the following goals:

  1. Reduce fuel loadings and the risk of wildfire in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI)
  2. Create conditions that would improve forest resiliency to fire, insects, disease, drought and climate change.

TTCF created a Forest Futures program to fuel innovation, cultivate sustainable economies for our region and create new jobs with the ultimate goal of preventing forest fires. The Forest Futures Salon Series hosts events to engage in productive conversations with scientists, investors, policymakers, artists and entrepreneurs to work towards a healthier forest.
