P.E.O. is an international philanthropic educational organization that promotes educational opportunities for women through grants, loans, and scholarships.
Community College Scholarship
The P.E.O., Chapter XE Local Scholarship for Community Colleges (est. 2002) is awarded to Truckee High School or Sierra High School senior female students, who plan to attend a community college, have maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA, and have been involved in community and/or school activities throughout high school.
Amount: $500
The Joan Kelly Memorial Scholarship
The Joan Kelly Memorial Scholarship (established in 2002) is awarded to a female Truckee High School graduating senior, who plans to attend a four-year college. Both a school and a non-school source for letters of recommendation are required. The scholarship committee will base their selection on four criteria:
- Scholastic – transcripts, test scores
- Personal – Essay, letters of recommendation
- Extracurricular – community service, sports, work, student government, clubs, etc.
- Financial Need
The P.E.O., Chapter XE Scholarship Committee may request an interview in the effort to determine the most eligible student. Applicants will be notified in advance if an interview is requested.
Amount: $2,000
The Mary Ellen Memorial Scholarship
The Mary Ellen Memorial Scholarship (established in 2015) is awarded to a female Truckee High School graduating senior, who plans to attend a four-year college. Two letters of recommendation are required, from a school and a non-school source, with at least one letter addressing the applicant’s faith and family relationships. Please note that an applicant’s “faith” is not limited to an organized religious experience, and “family” is not limited to the traditional family experience. The scholarship committee will base their selection on the following criteria:
- Scholastic – transcripts, test scores
- Personal – Essay, letters of recommendation
- Extracurricular – community service, sports, work, student government, clubs, etc.
- Financial Need
- Faith and Family – additional essay and letter of recommendation

Bobbie Shadle Memorial Scholarship
The Bobbie Shadle Memorial Scholarship is a need-based award for a female Truckee High School graduating senior. The scholarship committee will base their selection on the following criteria:
- Scholastic – transcripts, test scores, 3.5 minimum GPA
- Personal – Essay, letters of recommendation
- Extracurricular – community service, sports, work, student government, clubs, etc.
- Financial Need
Amount: $1,000
