Sylvia Hathaway Eisenberg- S.H.E.- is the grateful inspiration for these scholarships. Growing up in Silver Lake, Ca (a small area in Los Angeles) as one of six children of Melodile and Charles F. Hathaway, she saw a very different world than we see now. Her family owned and operated the Los Angeles Athletic Club which is the beginning that created the opportunity for this scholarship. LAACO was founded in 1880 when the idea of a social club in LA was as wild as the California frontier. Sylvia was the first woman elected to serve on the Board of Directors for LAACO where she served for 36 years and paved the way for future women in the company including Chairman of Stability LLC & President and Managing Partner Karen Hathaway.
Going to Principia and completing her college degree as an English Major and Art and Animal Husbandry minors, Sylvia then chose to return to the Southern California area. There she worked as an educator and enjoyed married life and being a mother of five children of her own. Sylvia enjoyed being an artist as well as active in various sports and social groups. Her passion for the English language also became a fun hobby of crossword puzzles that she continued to the end of her life. She loved living a well-rounded life, filled with laughter and just enough serious focus to keep life interesting.
Requirements: Must be a current California resident with a GPA of 3.70 or greater. Supplemental essay demonstrating a desire for a career in Teaching, or Education.
