On May 7, 2015, the Truckee and North Tahoe Community celebrates the life of a beloved community member.  E.J. Tegner loved the great game of golf, and his wife and friends are honoring his memory with the inaugural E.J. Tegner- “Let’s Bet on Youth” Golf Tournament.

Marilyn Wood, owner of Marilyn’s Catwalk in Truckee, started the E.J. Tegner Golf Foundation in memory of her late husband after he passed last year.  Both Marilyn and E.J. have called North Tahoe their home for decades, and are memorable faces in the community. E.J., who passed away while playing the game he loved most, is remembered fondly by those who knew him for his enthusiasm and vivacity.

“E.J. enjoyed life to its fullest.  A big part was to compete with his fellow golfers with a friendly wager.  From his love of wagering, ‘Let’s Bet’ became his nickname in our Wednesday Tahoe Players Group,” remembers Brian McGeever.

Marilyn and E.J.’s friends have come together to remember their friend through a memorial fund.  The fund is held at Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation and will serve the community in perpetuity.  Specifically, the E.J. Tegner- “Let’s Bet on Youth” Foundation is intended to bring the virtues and values of the game of golf to youth.

“I know E.J. would want to impact and improve the lives of youth through access and education to golf,” says Marilyn.

Unfortunately, golf is not easily accessible to many kids that could greatly benefit from the valuable life skills and core values that the game instills. The sportsman game develops character, and helps kids learn to manage emotions and navigate relationships and life more effectively. The fund will help create opportunities for more kids and teens to play golf.

The E.J. Tegner- “Let’s Bet on Youth” Golf Tournament is taking place on the one year anniversary of E.J.’s passing.  Old Greenwood is generously hosting the cheerful and fun day with an all-volunteer team led by community leaders, golf friends and Truckee Parks and Recreation. On the agenda are 18 holes of golf and contests for putting, hole-in-one, longest drive and closest to the pin.

To register, visit www.letsbetonyouth.com.  For a team of four, registration is $400; $100 for individuals.   If you have any questions or would like to sponsor a hole, please contact Brian McGeever at 530.581.1100 or Bob Hickam at 530.550.7004.

If you can’t join in the golf tournament, charitable donations can be made to: Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, E.J. Tegner Memorial Fund at  http://www.ttcfd.net/donate-now/.  “Donate Now” and indicate the memorial fund and the amount you’d like to contribute.
