The nationwide housing crisis hits close to the hearts of many North Tahoe and Truckee renters, homeowners and business owners. In fact, the recent Workforce Housing Surveys, part of the 2016 Regional Housing Study managed by Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation (TTCF) and its program the Community Collaborative of Tahoe Truckee (CCTT), received 1700 responses – 1000 participants more than expected!
The surveys are one part in a multi-faceted study that seeks to identify the true needs and potential solutions for our housing market. In addition to the online survey, the North Tahoe Family Resource Center and the Family Resource Center of Truckee hosted several sessions conducted in Spanish.
Some survey highlights include:
- 61.7% of employers say current housing conditions detract from their business’ success
- 43.1% of potential home buyers can’t find an affordable option
- 76% of employees overpay for housing
Finding the roots, symptoms and solutions of the housing issue has gained tremendous collaborative support from community members, nonprofits, county officials and businesses. Community support is an integral part of the study which includes a comprehensive needs assessment conducted by Bay Area Economics.
The next community outreach phase consists of three public forums. Forums will include preliminary data and survey results, and will seek input about the preference and practicality of possible solutions. All community members are invited to participate. Dates are:
- April 28, 2016: 5:30pm – 7:30pm, Truckee Airport
- May 3, 2016:5:30pm-7:30pm, North Tahoe Events Center
- May 11, 2016: 5:30pm – 7:30pm, Granlibakken Tahoe
Stacy Caldwell and Alison Schwedner, of TTCF and CCTT respectively, will facilitate the May 10th Good Morning Truckee. The program will introduce the Housing Study and cover vignettes from local employees and employers, data and survey results, and introduce solutions implemented in similar communities.
