These scholarships honor the memory of Dane Skutt, a founder of Mountain Hardware and Sports. Dane and his partners founded their business in 1977. Dane was passionate about treating customers as family. He never wavered from his core belief that his company would be the leader in outstanding guest service. The principles he taught and lived by are still part of Mountain Hardware’s core values. Dane and his partners, Greg Hovorka and Howard Jones sold the company to their employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan in 2001. The employee-owners want to recognize our founder and friend.
One is a need-based $4,000 scholarship ($1000 a year for up to four years) for a Truckee High student interested in business or the hospitality field. The scholar must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA in college. This award is open to all need-based students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
The second awards are two $2000 one-time need-based scholarships for two Truckee High students intending to attend a career tech, vocational, or trade school. This award is open to all need-based students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
