For Anthony Garcia-Ramirez, walking across the stage at Truckee High School last Spring represented more than the end of high school. It marked the beginning of something new. He was the first in his family to attend college.

He also received significant support from his community in the form of scholarships. He recently sat down with Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation (TTCF) to talk about his first year of school at UC Riverside, his ambitions to return to serve his community in the future, and what this scholarship means to him and his family.

Anthony shared with us:

Looking back at where I’m at now, being the first to attend college in my family and leaving that legacy for my younger sister means everything. She’s a sophomore in high school right now, and she’s personally told me that I’ve inspired her to continue her education.

In Pursuit of Greatness

Growing up in Truckee, Anthony learned early the importance of determination, curiosity, and community. In a household where English was not the first language, navigating school systems and planning for college often required extra effort and initiative. Those challenges became a source of motivation.

Throughout high school, Anthony demonstrated both academic commitment and a desire to contribute to his community. He maintained a strong academic record while challenging himself with advanced coursework, including AP Language and AP Spanish. He also enrolled in college classes through Sierra College while still in high school.

Anthony’s journey extended far beyond the classroom.

Driven by an interest in civic engagement and community leadership, Anthony served on Nevada County’s first Youth Commission, representing District 5. The commission gives young people a voice in local government and offers an opportunity to help shape conversations about issues affecting the region.

For Anthony, the experience offered a glimpse into how leadership and public service can make a tangible difference.

Serving on the Nevada County Youth Commission, working under Superintendent Tony Thurmond — all those small but very rigorous things made me think, maybe politics is something I do want to do in the future.

Anthony has also demonstrated an entrepreneurial mindset. Through the FuturePreneurs Pitch Showcase, a program designed to encourage innovation and problem-solving among young people, he earned second place for his business pitch. The experience required creativity, confidence, and the ability to communicate new ideas clearly.

These experiences shaped his ambitions for the future. When the volunteer scholarship committees read his application, they jumped at the opportunity to be the ones to invest in his future

I Could Spend All Day Thanking the Scholarship Donors

Anthony was awarded the Tahoe Donner Impact Scholarship, a multi-year scholarship totaling $60,000, as well as the $2,500 MAP Scholarship. Together, these awards represented more than financial support. They represent a powerful message from the community: we believe in your potential.

Scholarships like these are made possible through the generosity of local donors who want to ensure that students from the Tahoe Truckee region have access to higher education and the opportunity to pursue their goals.

For Anthony, that support means the ability to focus on learning and growth as he prepares for college and beyond. During the interview, he expressed his unending gratitude. A day does not go by that he doesn’t recognize how the scholarship has changed his life and made it possible for him to focus on his studies and apply his potential to his goals.

I recently spoke with my mom on the phone, and afterward was lying on my bed just looking up, thinking about the scholarship — I am so thankful. My family could not financially support me with that type of money. It motivates me to use this scholarship wisely and one day pay it back to my community.

Anthony plans education not only to build a successful career but also to continue giving back to the community that supported him. Anthony is pursuing his degree in Political Science and recently declared a minor in Environmental Studies. He is eager to return to his home community and get to work addressing the issues affecting his neighbors and friends.

For Every Scholarship, There are Many More Worthy Students – Help Us Even the Ratio.

Stories like Anthony’s reflect the best of what it means to be in community. Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation facilitates the award of 110+ community scholarships alongside our community partners. Together, donors and volunteers dedicate their time to this process to ensure that as many eligible students can take the next step toward their future as possible. They represent a wide range of backgrounds, aspirations, and life experiences.

For many students, these scholarships make the difference between imagining a path forward and pursuing it. When donors contribute to the TTCF Scholarship Fund, they are not simply supporting one student. They are investing in the future of the Tahoe Truckee region. They are investing in the teachers, leaders, innovators, and community members who will shape the next generation.

Each scholarship represents an act of trust in a young person’s potential and a belief in the power of education to transform lives.

Anthony’s story reminds us what is possible when a community comes together to support its students.
